There are a number of things for us to accomplish during this stage, including:

  1. Goals & Objectives
  2. Features & Requirements
  3. Inspiration & Research

Goals & Objectives

It is REALLY helpful for me to have a sense of what you want to accomplish. It's good for you as well! An easy way to do this is by determing "goals" or "objectives" for your project or website.

  • Goals are high-level and often a bit general… such as "increase sales" or "have a modern website."
  • Objectives are more helpful, as they are more defined and specific, including how you might achieve them… such as "Increase sales of products by creating a simple online store", or "Create an online store to sell products via paypal."

When coming up with your objectives, you might think of the two different perspectives. Your objectives might apply to:

  1. You as the owner of the site.
  2. Your visitors.

As the owner of the site you might be looking for an easier way to manage a process… like students signing up for classes. As a visitor, you might be looking for a class that fits in your schedule.

SMART goals

The "SMART" model for goal setting includes Specific, Measureable, Attainable, Realistic, and Timely.

Features & Requirements

Knowing the features you want will help me figure out the best way to design and organize your site, and which plugins we may need to use for specific features.

Common features might include:

  • An event calendar (with an actual calendar)
  • A newsletter (either on the site, Constant Contact, or MailChimp)
  • Concert listings
  • Image galleries
  • classes/workshops
  • Ecommerce (store)
  • Sign-up forms
  • Contact forms
  • Etc…

Inspiration & Research

It is REALLY helpful to have some inspiration (ie, other websites) that we can use a good model for what you are looking for. So, I will ask you to provide a list of URLs of websites that you like and a little information about what design, feature, or another element you like about the site. There are a number of things you might consider when finding inspiration sites:

  • Fonts
  • Colors
  • images
  • video
  • Layout
  • Navigation/Organization
  • Specific features (like calendars, events, online store)
  • messaging
  • ease of use

Really anything that you can comment on can be helpful. For me to understand how to design the best site for you, it is helpful for me to understand what you consider to be a good site!
